Lunar New Year Tea & Calligraphy

The Year of the Wood Snake begins on January 29! Come sip tea, savor community, and play around with calligraphy to ring in the lunar new year. In this session, we will write 春聯 chun lian a.k.a. "spring words" to welcome good luck, ward off bad luck, and call in our heart’s desires for the year ahead. Auspicious words have been written on red paper and hung on the door for lunar new year celebrations across China for thousands of years.

Practice making marks and writing Chinese characters with traditional ink stones and brushes. Basic mark-making skills translate across any fluid artistic medium to reignite creativity for the new year! Grind your own ink, learn about the tradition of “spring words,” and write out your hopes & wishes for the year ahead. Participants will take home their own spring words written on red paper. The workshop will begin and end with tea. Small snacks provided.

5 participants maximum. Open to all; no background in tea or calligraphy required!
